CANTERBURY

Can Canterbury? In Christchurch. swimming circles th© opinion is that not only can Canterbury but it will when the-^N.Z;, championships ;, are decided at Auckland. > ' CANTERBURY Ms, sending north a strong team, but it" is noteworthy for the fact that ladies constitute the majority of competitors from this end of the country. The Canterbury centre's nominees to represent it m Auckland are: D. P. Lindsay, men's three style events; C. Herd, N.Z. breasts troke . title holder; Mrs. Thompson, N.Z. ladies'-, diving title holder; Miss L.; Copplestone, ladies' 220 and 440 yds. breaststroke events; Miss D. Breward, intermediate breaststroke events; and Miss ' V. Berry, girls' junior events. In Lindsay, Canterbury has a representative who, if conditions are right, may be looked to to create new Dominion records, particularly over the 880 yards. Two weeks ago m a trial race Lindsay covered the half-mile In '11m in. 54 3/ssecs., thus beating by 4 4/ssecs. the then N.Z. record for the = distance of 11min. 59 2/Ssecs., ,-. held by A. Baird, of Auckland. This was a remarkable performance for Lindsay, who is just coming into his own as a swimmer. Lindsay extends his opponents to the utmost, and it is his tireless, even strokes that will tell the tale at the championships. Last Thursday evening Lindsay won the 880 yds. Canterbury .championship m fine style. Although his time was longer than his previous performance, being 12min. 9 3/ssecs., he made a great showing, and beat handsomely L. Hill, the title-holder, whose previous record time for the distance was 12min. 14 2/ssecs. . The '880 yds. battle at Auckland should prove a ding-dong. go. It is generally believed m Christ-

D — : church that Lindsay will prove the winner, but Baird's chances must not be /taken lightly. The Aucklander is m fine fettle, but Lindsay is out to beat him and he has not only tip-top form but speed on,; his- side. ; „ Another Canterr bury competitor of whom great things Herd.

As an exponent of the breast and backstroke he is a front ranker. ' Herd holds the 220 yds. breaststroke championship of Canterbury, his record time being 3min. - 8 2/ssecs.; , . Last week over the same distance he put up a winning performance m 3min. ; 11 3/.sees. / ] ■ Holder of the N.Z. breaststroke title. Herd had a romp home win last week. | He has amazing speed, and those who compete against him up north will have to get off the mark at the doubl. to beat him. , Of the lady competitors for Auckland nothing startling need be expected from Miss L. Copplestone, until last week holder of the 220 yds. ladies' breaststroke, championship ot Canterbury, Miss Copplestone met Miss Breward, a promising swimmer who is fast com- . ing to the fore, over the distance, and the latter clipped 18secs. off Miss Cppplestone's previous record of 3min. 58 4/ssecs. The race was a procession for Miss Breward all the way. No opponent took the water against Miss Copplestone m the ladies' quartermile championship. It will be surprising if Canterbury achieves anything - big at .Auckland m the long distance ladies' events. Fans are not optimistic, anyway.
