Caution To Used-Car Buyers
In a case which was recently before the courts,' it appeared that some people had. bought a secondhand car without' obtaining the necessary transfer from the previous owner. "THEY were therefore unable to ob--1 tain registration, numbers for <it and it has been laid up.for some months because ; .the previous owner refuses to recognize., the sale and will not part with the registration papers. Whatever the rights .or wrongs of this particular case, there is no doubt that it contains a lesson for , all who buy second-hand cars.'. ' That is, to see that, the proper transfer of the registration is made before the" sale is completed. . How to Make Sure Under the regulations, the seller of the car is required to send the "registration papers to the local authority together with information as to the name and address of the buyer.: The new owner can then re-register the car on payment of a fee, arid the transaction is complete. . It is m <he interest of -the seller to see that this is done, because he is under a heavy penalty to advise the authority of the sale. It is also very important for the buyer to make sure that he obtains the registratibn papers, because without them he cannot be' sure that the car really belonged to the person from whom he bought it. . . Don't complete the transaction, therefore, until you have seen the registration papers, and you may then be reasonably sure that the ' seller is legally entitled to dispose of the car. Altogether apart from the fact that you are not supposed to use the car unless it is registered m your name, this transfer of the papers will go a good -\vay to giving yiou.a legal title to the vehicle.' ■, . /
