Danger Of Closed Mbtor-Cars
One of the largest Wellington . garages makes a speciality of repairs to damaged cars and the salvaging of "road wrecks." POME idea of the number qf accidents >D which occur on our roads may be obtained by making a visit to this establishment every week for a period, and much useful" information may be gleaned by examination of the <lam T aged cars which pass through the repair shop. One feature which cannot fail.to impress anyone after seeing a number of these wrecks is the amount, of broken glass which is always present. The danger from this cause is obvious, especially as the windscreen and side-screens are so close to the faces of the occupants of the car. The danger from glass is, of course, increased many times m the case of the closed car,, and now that saloons and coaches are becoming so popular we think that it is of real importance that some . solution to the problem should be sought. There are several proprietary brand's of "urisplinterable" glass on the market, but the difficulty with these is that they are very expensive compared with ordinary plate-glass, and they are not easily obtained when replacements are required. «. . Anyone who has had experiencewith celluloid will agree that it is m no way a .satisfactory substitute for glass; whatever may be its claims for side-curtajhs, it would be-useless m a windscreen. Sooner or later, someone will come along with an entirely new material, combining the advantages of celluloid and glass and this Is no doubt the most satisfactory solution. • In the meantime, is there any way m which the danger from flying glass can be reduced? What do*our readers think?
