WANGANUI PIRATES KEEP WINNING
Tech. Old Boys Show Improvement
(From "Truth's" Wanganui Representative.)
The third round of the championship matches was commenced on Saturday, when Pirates defeated Marists by 13 to 3, Tech. Old Boys vanquished Old Boys by 22 to 11, and Kaierau won by default from Ratana.
IN order to retain interest m the Cup matches, the Wanganui Sub-union decided to initiate a cdmpetition within , a competition m connection with. the third round of, matches, and whatever team does best in 'this round will receive fifteen miniature cups. Points will count for the championship just the same, but while , the Pirates appear to have a • mortgage on the big cup, it is quite on the* cards that Technical • Old Boys or Kaierau will win the • miniature cups. Next :season Tech. will have, to play without Irwin, their very clever, nippy centre, who is going to Wellington .College. He ; should make his mark there at: the Rugby game. It is probable Norman Dowsett, tho brilliant wing-forward and champion swimmer, will be played on the. wing, I where he should prove a big success. Old Boys, were without the services of their best forward, Bob Murie, 'm their match against Tech. Old Boys, while Fulton (full-back), was also *on the 'flutist. Thus weakened, the play of the blues was very patchy, and they were beaten 22 toll. Tech. scored a couple of tries within six minutes of the start. The Old Boys' backs then indulged m some good passing bouts and Tech. had an anxious time of it. However, the defence was equal to the occasion, though the blues • notched a penalty goal. , .; In the second half Tech. had much the best of ■ matters, ana left off winnersby 22 to 11. . >
Included m the Tech. total was a goal from a mark by. Stiver, who potted a wonderful effort from near the touch line. . ■ One of the finest solo efforts seen on the ground for many a long day was. that put m ; by Ford, the Tech. wing.-threequa'rter'. It is pleasing to see "Ginger" putting a little more pep into his play, as previously he has shown a lack of determination m his running-. , . All Tech. forwards played well, White and Dyke (wing) being outstanding. The lattfer is certain of rep honors on his present form. ' ■ Bert' Delves, is showing all his, old cleverness as a five-eighths, and for all round work is out on his own ( m that position. Gray, a junior, who played full-back for Old Boys, was very weak. « The best of the blue backs were UdjTand Carlson. Cameron would be much more use to his side if he knew how and when to pass. Burdett and Birley were the best of the blue forwards. The former is improving with every game. Brn Young was all there m the tight stuff. Mr. J. S. King, formerly wellknown in 1 Wellington Rugby circles is now coaching the Wanganui Collegiate School seniors, and he , has already improved the team greatly. Taihape Sub-union will send their senior and junior reps m to play matches against Wanganui on Saturday, the 31st inst.
