DRINK AT DANCES
(From "Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) Two young women appeared before the Wanganui Magistrate last week on charges of theft. The first, for whom Lawyer Theadwell appeared, was a married woman. It appeared that the accused married when she was 16 years of ' age and some six months ago separated from her husband. , She entered Mrs. "Ward's shop and paid a deposit on one frock, but during the temporary absence of Mrs. Ward from the fitting-room she apparently considered that another flimsy article of a green tint .would suit her much better. She was. admitted to probation for two years and her name was suppressed on condition that she refunded the. amount due to Mrs. Ward and submitted herself to the kindly influence of the "Big Sister" ; movement, which is very prominent m Wanganui. The second young woman was charged with the theft of a wedding dress, worth £10, and a frock valued at £2. She was stated to have been led astray by a married man, who had ' taken her to dances and given her drink. - Magistrate Barton, m admitting the young woman to two years' probation, j remarked ' oorn r the evil of liquor being supplied to girls at dances. The -accused collapsed and was carried from.the Court.
