THE HIGH COST OF TRAVEL

(Prom "Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) The first-class fare from Auckland to Newmarket is only f ourpence, but it cost H. H. Russell £3/1/8 more than that. ■■'■■.... He took a ticket from Newmarket to Takanini (return), but on his return journey he overlooked the fact and continued on to Auckland. As a consequence he had to face three charges— failing to produce a ticket, overriding on his ticket, and intending to evade payment of his legal fare. Magistrate Hunt, on hearing the charge, remarked emphatically: ''They're always doing that!" The Bench inflicted a fine of £2, witnesses' expenses £1, plus two shillings costs. Expensive travelling at twenty shillings and eightpence per mile!
