FURIOUS FIREMAN
1 Hindu Knocked Out FIGHT WITH POLICE (From "Truth's" Special Dunedin Rep.) Tall and sinewy, Charles James Fox has the appearance of one who would be hard to handle m a street fight. .He is a ship's fireman, at ©resent employed on the tug Dunedin, and, according to the evidence of the police, he went home one night recently and had an argument with a Hindu who was staying with him. The result of the argument was .that the Hindu was taken to the 'hospital m an unconscious state and will probably be there for some tfme. : The police were sent for. and when Constable Simpson arrived at the house to arrest Fox, the latter resisted
violently and gave the policeman the roughest of spins, finishing ■ up by tearing the. cape the officer was wearing. In fact, it was not until the arrival of the 4octor to attend to the Hindu's injuries that the furious fireman was overpowered and handcuffed. "Yes, that's, right," said Fox when charges of resisting and of damaging a cape were read dyer to him. So far as doing bodily harm to the Hindu was concerned he said that they had had a bit of an argument and the alien went into the kitchen and got a big knife. Senior- Sergeant Quarterrnain explained that the assaulted man was still m a bad way and unable to appear. - ' Consequently the police would havo to ask for a remand on that particular charge ,and this was granted. "Well, what have you to say as an excuse for your struggle with the constable?" asked the Magistrate. "I didn't exactly struggle, sir," explained the accused, "I merely wanted him to let me go and tell the wife to ring up Port Chalmers and tell them I wouldn't be down , In the" morning." The explanation lacked conviction and Fox was ordered to pay fines amounting to £4 iOs. On the more serious charge he iwas admitted to bail If or £130.
