A NEW MODE OF MOTION
1 MY DEAR ROSAMUNDE,— ,... . v v . *v m M 11 Flares that spring from the front, the sides, the back— the g S circular swing of coats, the. flying lines of jabot and scarf— all these g 1 indicate that the straight silhouette is as .dead as the proverbial - _ door-nail, and that the new idea is "motion." . m M ' Quite appiopriate for this age, too, when we dance and golf and g _ play tennis, and do everything that calls for action— except walk. g 1 We held fcr a long time to the straight, slender silhouette, be- g i cause it was so little trouble— easy to make, easy to get" into, and. _ easy to wear. . . , . - , Wk g It was young. It -was simple. It was right m the picture for m _ each and every occasion. ■ . . . = 1 But we are tired of formality. We want something more flowing, jj 1 more graceful, more animated— a change from the tube-like uniform § W garments we have so long and devotedly affected. , . ' s g', -First -of all, the new mode offers comfort to its followers. g 1 • The straight line was meant for a world standing still, not for a g M world m action. ' ' . ~ m If one walked, the line was spoiled; if one stepped into a tram, g _ one'^s garters arrested the public gaze; did one sit, creases and p W crumples advertised the fact. ' \ ■.- ■ ■ B m Do not lament. . M . • — M The upper part of the frock ffishionable i$ still- cut on princess 1 lines, which suggest," but. do' not actually fit the figure. m _ It is the 'skirt that is animated by godets, loose panels, circular g 1 frills seton m vertical rows, and by every possible adjustment and. --^ m ve/sion of the circular tlare, the side flare, the back flare, and the |= | flare at the front. ; JASMINE. -|
