CYCLING RACE
PROMISING BOYS Auckland Champions (From "Truth's" Special Auckland . Rep.) In the short time the Blandford stadium has been m operation it is surprising what a large number of .youths have taken on the cycling game. On Saturday night again the wheel and sprint events were filled as comfortably as the track would hold and some fine work was witnessed. Amongst the amateur* the rivalry is very keen and during the fou~ weeks the stadium has been open there has been a vast improvement m the track work of the competitors. Last Saturday m the 4 -lap event the times were very creditable and the finishts close and exciting. Blakeway, Casey, Mathieson, Grant, Kelly and Gainsborough were the chief contestants. The first-named carried off the prize after a great sprint m the final. Amongst the pros. Phil O'Shea, Henderson and Burnand were up from Christchurch and added greatly to the interest m the meeting. : O'Shea was again primo favorite and ne rose to the occasion. An Auckland half-mile championship was provided for local runners and brought out a fine race, which was won in' capital style by A. Goodwill. Th<> peds. Avere provided with a 100 yd* cash run, with a similar distance race for amateurs, and the num-, ber o? entries was most encouraging 1 . Hudson, a very promising runner, pocketed the £10 after a very ( fine burst-o ff the bVzy&s mark m 9 4/5. •■ . ■ McCrystal, from 4%, won the amateur trophy m lOsecs dead. The sprinters arc lacking m the art of starting. Mr. W. Davidson controls the pistol splendidly and gives the competitors every chance, but practice is what is most required.
