GREAT FINISH

How Sheik Beat Ahuriri ADDINGTON FORM After being forced to cover a lot of extra ground, Sheik mowed down his eleven opponents m the Canterbury Handicap and won like a bulldog. The hot favorite, Ahuriri, was on tho inside of him when the last lap was entered upon. When Sheik tackled him three fur-. longs from home he headed him ,and joined the leader, Loganwood. Once into the straight Ahuriri"' challenged Sheik, the pair drawing away from the rest of the field. Though hard driven, Ahuriri could not overhaul Sheik. For a mile and three-quarters Loganwood made the pace. All through the first mile and a half Black Admiral and Away were handily placed, •but when it came to s.erious business they tired badly. Away has been more or less lame of late and m consequence he was short of work. Dolly Dillon showed a wonderful burst of speed and had she not left her feet after going a furlong she would have been closer to the winner. • • . ■ Black Admiral did everything right as usual, but when twelve furlongs had been covered he was. beaten. Great Hope went a good_race and should soon be led m a winner. Logan Chief made a good run over the last five furlongs to be m fifth place at the end. Waitaki Girl did not leave the mark. Sheik was given a rousing reception on returning to scale.
