John Riley, seaman, and later a miner, who was sentenced~to death m Queensland for the murder of Sparks, the first mate of th% barque Kitty, at Rockhampton, m 1886. The sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life. Riley had served not more than eleven years of his sentence when Radford, the second mate of the Kitty, m a death-bed confession m England, took on himself the responsibility of the thrust that killed Sparks. : - ;; •;: : Itiley was liberated; but it is said that, later, he compensated for the murder he did not commit m Queensland by committing one m England.
