». DOING WITHOUT SLEEP
THE magnetic force of Dunedin's big Exhibition is drawing a ceaseless ■stream of visitors to the southern city, and the problem of transport for them while they are there is one that is largely solved by William H. Mackenzie, manager of the tramways. For more than six weeks now he has been doing without most of his customary sleep? , Quite early m the morning he can be seen at the pivotal point from which the tram and 'bus routes radiate, while it is safe to gamble on seeing him about the Exhibition gates just before the last car leaves. Quietly spoken, and deliberate m all his doings, Billy doesn't know what it is to get bustled. , . Under his guiding hand, even the biggest crowds are quickly eaten up by the fine fleet of trams and 'buses at his disposal. As is the case with most men m public positions, he has at times been whirled about m a flood of criticism;, but much of this has been unjustified and merely had the effect of strengthening the confidence of the public m him. ■ • ,-.'..•
Billy sings a good song, and his name is always found on the programmes of the numerous benefit performances promoted by the tramwaymen.
