ON TRIAL IN THE WELTER

An Unwieldy Bunch PUNTERS WILL FIND IT HARD The Kiwitea Welter at Feilding to-day is going to introduce to the public a number of horses who have not raced this season. The field is an unwieldy one, and alto- - gether it is a nasty sort of race to end a day with.

The first thi-ee horses on the list, Stork, Glenross and Admiral Codririgton, are having their first outing, and on that account will not come m for a lot of support. If one of the trio is destined to be the winner, it may be Glenross, who m the same event last year, opened his season's work with a surprise victory. History may repeat itself to-day. ■ . ; ■ Olympic would be better suited by this race than by the Cup, and perhaps the same could be said of Kalakaua, and of the pair the former is fancied most. Patuki has not been up long enough, but Crossfire has had the work. Good judges backed him at Trentham to win the big mile, won by Phoenix Park, and if the* were right he would have a show to-day. At Ashhurst Martulla ran a meritorious third and when at her best she is 'worth following m welters. Sottano disgraced himself at Levin when expected to bring home the bacon, but Beaumont's showing m the

Cup at the same meeting says he -will soon be heading a field off. At Mrfsterton Bumptious ran third and if he has come. on just a little since that race he would take the eye.

Euchre, given better assistance than was the case at Levin, would have a rough show. Last Saturday he made the pace and m doing so was covering the ground most of the way.

Troilus has disappointed so far this year, and Captain Wai, when backed at Levin also failed. In his favor it must be said that he got more than his share of the. knocks going. .

Hope springs eternal m the human breast and the puzzle set m this event will not stop the optimists from having it on.

To give them a lead we suggest that horses hard to beat may be Martulla Bumptious and Beaumont

with Glenross best of the top weights.. .-- ,
