NORTHERN TURF NOTLS

!The Surveyor — Hessian youngster ing handled by P. Gonway at Ellerswill join H. Jury's team at Avonle later on. # . . # • » L Wallace, who has Tea Time at ondale for competition m two-year-L events, has the disappointing Manpiko still m work at Te Aroha, also iye-year-old full -brother, old Golden ibble, and a Quin Abbey — Helen Ult mare. ' . * * * ■ Five-year-olds have provided more nners of the Avondale Cup than xiorses of other ages. They have won ten out of 37, nine have gone to four-_year-olds, seven to aged horses, six to six^year.-olds, and five t° three-year-olds. It is worth noting that t< there is not one three-year-old eniraged m this week's contest. ##, * • Gala Day, Broadwood and Clarus will be three of H. Goldfinch's rides at Avondale on Saturday. ■' . m « • * ■ Whangarei Club have every reason to be pleased with the entry list received m connection with their spring fixture early next month. President R. J., Hoskings. was round about the city; /last week-end reminding owners and trainers of nomination day, and there is little, doubt that his efforts were mainly responsible for the swellIngcof the list. , ■' • * # * ■ ' Sir Rosebery is among those entered for the Whangarei Cup, which includes most of ■ the local handicap horses. ••■• * * * It looks any 'odds on the visitors taking away most of the important stakes at Avondale this Saturday and Monday. # * ' : '» ' • One of the biggest horses m work at Ellerslie is the Archiestown — Lady IWaahi four-year-old m. E. Pope's charge. The big chap is a half-brother Ito Irish Jig and Cantoris, owned by' Ijj. Harris, for a long time mine host h>f the Huntly Hotel; but nowadays Hiving m retirement at Mt. Albert. Gold Light gained ■onous last spring when she established the weight-carrying record

since the race wasv run ovex* a twelvefurlong course. ■'■■*■■'• # # Lady Ridicule has not been noticed going really fast of late, but is not being kept idle. ™. . * '* * Tintoretto and Bright Light are both looking hardened m condition, though m the past the'y^ have not been anything to gloat over.' , # * a Sir • Archie, whose one win at Ellerslie m June' compelled him to ,go out into the open class m search of stake money, can muster up a deal of pace, but may never be a great success among the open sprinting class. ■ * # . #■ Four of the last five contests for the Avoridale Stakes have gone outside the province, the winners referred to being Mermin, Bathos, Killocra and Automne. The visiting owners hold a strong 'hand again for the classic, which is wortii a cool thousand. V - * • * *" Erne has been responsible for some speedy displays at ; different stages of his track doings. He is the one-eyed three-year-old trained by T. George, who showed a fleet pair of heels m the autumn at Ellerslie to ' other juveniles, and then went on to Avondale and let the punters down badly when his stable-mate Nucleus returned a good double-figure dividend. # * <3 Ballymoy 11. has been doing well . m short sprints at Ellerslie, and is m the Flying at Avondale. She is mostly down at the poundage ■ where light boys are not [ much use to her, but her turn must surely come. •■<" #.■■#.;.* If Star Stranger starts m the Maiden at Avondale on Saturday and fails to show- up, then the Wanganui Maiden lot must have been a poor one indeed. Marble Town, m at Avondale, is a stable companion of Sir Archie at Ellerslie, and gained a few friends last autumn by placed form at Paeroa. Marble Town has been working well m company with Sir Archie at headquarters. . • # * # ■You want to be with some horseman at Avondale who is not afraid to give it a. go — a horseman with dash. Those who have fear it is just as well to side-step.. • # # * ■ N. Rowe, who steered Lueullent when that gelding touched Comical off m the important Winter Hurdles at Trentham last July, will ride Te 'Tahi at Avondale. Brpadwood, o/ie of the most ' consistent performers that ever raced m this country, appears to be galloping again with his . old dash. However, he is well up m the poundage these days. ■ •* . " * ■» ■A; Tinker, well known as the, successful pilot' of. White Comet/ and Highflowri during the winter, will have a full book at Avondale. ' Among . iiis rides • are White Comet, T-all Timber, Sapling; Arsene Lupin, and Paddon; also Hyde Park m the Guineas on the second day. ' : • • # ■» * • The' Taranaki contingent for Avon* dale could not be shipped from New Plymouth by last Friday's steamer owing to the rough state of the weather at that port. # «= * Some trouble Was experienced m accommodating all the visiting horses round about Avondale this term, but all those with winning prospects will be on the right spot after the cash, # # # '••.-■ It will be his inability to begin, "if anything, that will prevent Knighthood from getting some of -, the money at Avoridale. It will not be that his condition is lacking. ■.■■':« # v '* President Hoskings, when down round about the city last week-end, was loud m his contention that the Whangarei track was open for galloping purposes thi ; ee times a week lately, and he stated that the country contingent at Avondale would certainly not be found short of work. * *.- * True Blood' is a two-year-old of which something good was expected had it not gone slightly amiss. It may turn out all right later on. * ' # * Study the horses nearest the fence'at Avondale m short races, and then go for the best of them. * # •■■ « ■ There is one two-year-old m the Avondale Stakes which will hardly be caught short : of work. That is the 'Mullingar youngster Balnagar, whic'i is stated to have stood up to plenty of sprinting. "Candid" noticed this youngster last ■ Saturday morning

going the full Stakes distance when others of his age were indulging m much shorter tasks. ## # ■ There is no doubt about Tea Tray s stock possessing some speed. At least that is the general impression formed after noting many of them m action this spring. - ' « * # W. Ryan will most likely be found on the Te Aroha-trained Tea Time m the Avondale Stakes. . * * * Master Doon has been doing hi 3 work on the . bit at Ellerslie, but of course he has not been going with anything very flash m Kamehameha and Tuscan. # ♦ * Danae is an Ellerslie track toiler that may make good. #. # * Horsemen riding favored candidates m this year's Avondale Cup who have previously won the event are J. O'Shea (Prince Mer--riwee, 1913) and R. Reed (Moly-. neaux, 1921). O'Shea will be on Tanadees this week and, Reed on Rapine. « * * Avondale is a track that needs dash on the part of the jockey if success is to be achieved. Roy Reed is one riding this week-end who has met with a fair amount of .success on the course m the past. * . * * Drawing a favorable position at the barrier has a lot to do with a horse's prospects at Avondale, especially at the six and seven-furlong posts. •* ■ * In years gone by at Avondale, when the opening event was usually a Maiden Hack, run over a sprint distance, it was good policy to look for something returning a double- figure

dividend, but of late, since most of the Maidens have been deckled over nine furlongs, the public have proved nearer the mark m their main selections. There is no reason to believe they -will be far out this week-end. ■# * * The three Reed brothers have all steered a winner of the Avondale Cup m the past. Besides Roy's success, Ashley (now m Australia) rode Highland home first m 1923, while the late Con brought Glen Canny past the post a victor m 1920.. * #■ ■ * Royal Present, one of this year's candidates, holds the ' time record of 2min 36secs for the Avondale Cup since it was run over a mile and a-half m Molyneux's year — 1921. Prior to that it was a ten-furlong event. # * ' ■*. One. has to go back to 1899 to find the Roiilston family at Pukekohe being connected with a winner of the -Avondale Cup.' That was that good horse Record Reign, who afterwards won the Grand National Hurdles under a heavy impost. On Saturday the Pukekohe colors will be carried by Barometer, who towards the end of last autumn won two different mile and a-quarter handicaps — one at Te Rapa and one at Avondale. Though without a race of late, he has done well during the winter, and has been pleasing m his track work at Ellerslie. '* * # Barometer is being ticked off as one of the most likely ones down at the minimum. # « # Gold Light had 9.3 when she won the Avondale Cup last yeai\ and because of that, and the minimum impost raised from 6.7 to 7.0 this season, there is a tendency to support both Rapine (9.9) and Musketoon (9.5) for this week's contest. The reason is that under last year's scale they are not overburdened, and are really meeting the rubbish at no great disadvantage. * * * Even Rapine's weight has been carried to victory m the event before today, St. Paul (10.8), California (9.12), and Chortle (9.9) all capturing the Cup, but it must be remembered that when they won the distance was ten, not twelve, furlongs.

Another attempt is to be made to get a race out of the Wellington Cup winner Insurrection. The prospects are not good, and when given strong ■work that will probably be the end of him.
