Fleet Visits

"I want to know (writes "Welling--tonian") why every visiting fleet or squadron of any size favors Auckland more than Wellington. In 1908 the whole American squadron only visited Auckland, the capital port was saclly neglected. "The Special Service Squadron m more recent years made Auckland their i-endezvous and final port, while Wellington was favored by the visit of the Hood, Repulse, and Adelaide. The light cruisers passed by our yecy doors on their way north from southern ports. Something wrong surely, especially when our harbor, is capable of holding the largest fleet m safety, and our hospitality is unparalleled. "Last week we saw over forty warships at anchor m our fine harbor, and it was easily seen on this occasion that three or four times that number could have lined up m safety and comfort, but for some vmknown reason the first line battleships all went to Auckland. We are not jealous but we apparently lack influence somewhere."
