SCHOOLBOY NOTES.

Say, Charlie, I shall expect to see you up at Anderson Park next week. 'What; didn't you- know the school tournament. Wjas being held? Yes, you bet I shall be there, even if I get the sack for. it. I must see these lads m action. I enjoyed -myself very much at the last one. ' Otago was playing Wellington, if,- I remember right, and a Wellington boy sent m a hard high shot and the little chap m goal tried to put it over the- bar, but it hit -under -itha-baS' a.ncL- -.went in Aj

It was a great try on Jhis part and real bad luck. Tho tears came to his eyes, and I went over and congratulated him on his fine attempt to save. He was heartbroken, but from the kick-off Otago got down and equalised. Gone were the tears and his face was wreathed m smiles and he forgot his sore wrist m a moment.

Now for the inside forward's position. To be a good inside forward one needs to be fast, clever and above all unselfish. He must find the ball for his wing mate and also for his centre forward. He must be between the two, but just a yard or so behind. If he. gets beaten for the ball he must get back and Avorry the man until he makes*him' part with it. An inside man should always be ready to change places with his wing- or centre man and must be able to use both feet, be a judge of pace, and able to push a ball through to his mates when necessary- If the' play is on the opposite wing to him he has got to place himself m a position to receive the ball at any time and get going as soon as possible. He should learn to be a good shot, and when well placed should always have a "pop." On no occasion 'should he dally about when m front of the goal. Never get tired of shooting. Always make ground. It is often necessary for an inside man to help his half-backs, but lie must get back to his possio quickly. Short, sharp sprints and getting oft' the mark quickly, find any exercise that will make him quick with his feet is the training an inside man requires.

Next week I will deal with the centre forward position, so "cheerio."
