COLLEGES CLASH
WELLINGTON WIN TOURNEY
' The opening games of the intercollegiate tournament were played at Lyali Bay, Wellington, last Saturday afternoon, good football being provided for the , large crowd of enthusiastic spectators. Although ; the grounds were m good order, a cold southerly wind raked the .field and interfered somewhat with the play. Wanganui Collegiate School demonstrated their superiority over Christ's College by defeating them by the comfortable margin of IS to 3. The southern team opened ' well and had the better of the first spell, but the Wanganui boys made no race of it m the second and ran out easy : winners. The match between the Wellington and Nelson College^ was not up to the same' standard of football as the other game, ,. but interest ran high from start to finish, as the issue was m doubt till the .final whistle. The wind proved disconcerting to both teams, ' but the backs handled the ball with a creditiftle degree . of certainty, while the forwards' strenuous rushes were a feature of /the game. The superior combination of
the Wellington vanguard turned the scales for the local boys, who left the field victors by 11 to 8. •'. The college tournament was concluded on Monday, the winners of Saturday's games— Wangaiiui and Wellington — playing off for honors. Nelson and Christ's, the losers on Saturday, mixed it willingly, the former getting the decision by 3 to nil. The Wanganui boys, judged by. their play against Christ's, looked to have a good chance of coming out on top of the lighter Wellington College players, but the home boys, after a magnificent contest, emerged the victors by 17 to 13.
The defeat of Christ's College m the inter-collegiate tournament m Wellington last Saturday did not effect any great surprise m Christchurch, on account of the fact that College have not had enough practice, owing to their headmaster,, the Rev. C. E. Crosse, refusing to permit them to play m club competition matches. These English customs will not go down with colonial people, and' the day may not be very far distant when the reverend gentleman will be told of the fact.
