GEORGE LAMBERT.
Petrol propelled bicycles had not been m New Zealand very long before George Lambert commenced to realise that motor cycling provided all the thrill that he wanted m life. He purchased a mo- bike and was soon figuring m most of the speed contests down Christchurch way. From 1909 until 1918 Lambert was a member. of the police force, the latter part of his service b&ng m the detective branch. In 1918 he made a record cycle and sidechair run from Christchurch to Hantner and back, a distance of 176 miles,; m 4 hours 3S minutes, a performance which still stands unbeaten. About this time he left the "foorce" and took on a billet with 'the Indian motor cycle people m Christchurch, and seriously interested himself m speeding. Beach races are his long suit, and he holds every New Zealand solo record, fr.om the 'flying. mile to the 60-mile championship, whilst there is also to his credit the record for the Australasian flying mile, his time on this stunt being 36 2-ssec, or the equivalent of 99 miles per hour. So far as the notching of further records is concerned, the main subject of these lines is just about at a dead end, there being nobody offering to loweY his colors. Consequently, his chief diversion for the last . four years or so has been m the fracturing, of his own records. All of. Lambert's .performances have been accomplished on an Indian. He is a Wanganui-ite, .scales 14st 71b, and, m ,his off time, presides over the motor section of the Pioneer Sports Club.
