Another Sixer
BOGUS LIEUTENANT'S FUTILE I ■ SCHEMES. It was m the new role of a go-getter that Harry Edward Phillips, whose likeness appears herewith, rushed himself into' gaol once more m Auckland tlie other day. This whirlwind crook, who came to the country only twelve months ago, is now serving his second sentence of six months. His first was gained through a huge bluff he raised when swanking round Auckland posing'as a former lieutenant. in the Irish Constabulary and stating that he wished, to bring off a scheme whereby he could settle former members of the gallant Black and Tans on the land:
But when he started to issue dud cheques he' signed his death knell m this laudable project , and cracked stones instead. . •
Phillips was out of gaol only three days when he hopped out as traveller for a firm securing .electrical contracts, and lw false returns secured commissions that he was not entitled to. "He has committed the most barefaced frauds by making and receiving payment on no fewer than 41 spurious contracts," a Magistrate told Phillips' the other day dnd hit him for another sixer.,.
