The Tennis Championship
AN INJUSTICE DONE.
In our tennis contributor's, review of the N.Z. Championship tourney at Auckland a misundei-standing concerning ,the times at which certain important matches were played led to an injustice, being done not only to the officials of the N.Z. Lawn Tennis Association who were managing the event, but alsc to Ollivier, who won the championship, inasmuch as the criticism detracted from the merit of Ol-liviei-'s win.
Several, cori-espondents have written m terms of commendation of the management of the tournament, and tributes are paid to the success which attended the committee's efforts to overcome the difficulties created by. the wet 'vreather. . . \ In regard to the playing of the semifinals and final and the suggestion that "it was almost criminal to ask Laurenson to take the court at all," the facts are as follow: — The semi-finalr-L. France v. Lauren - son, was played early m the afternoon of Wednesday, December 31, and the final, Ollivier v. Laurenson, was commenced at ,1.45 on Thursday, January 1. , Laurenson had had %Z hours free froni any play and (according to one of our correspondents who spoke to him) : when ■he went on to play Ollivier he was fresh and fit ' and full of vim. Ollivier played his' semi-final against D. France at 2.30 on Wednesday afternoon, played the semi-final m the doubles' at 10 .on Thursday morning, played the final of the. singles against Laurenson at 1.45, and the final of the daublea at 4 o'clock the same afteinoon. .'■■.
