BOXING
PURDY DEFEATS TROWERN. ' After an exciting contest last Monday night at the Auckland Town Hall. Trowern, who was making his initial appearance m the professional ranks, went under to Purdy on points. In the early stages Purdy proved far too clever for his opponent and was well ahead on points after the fifth round. Most of : Trowern's many attempts to get to close quarters were nipped m the bud .by Purdy's ducking and exceptionally , brilliant footwork, and it was obvious that Trowern would /have to go for a K.O. to win. The round provided something of | a sensation when Purdy, ; who was re- ! ceiving severe punishment at his opponent's hands,; was seen, to double up m obvious pain. He staggered through the ropes and was helped out of the ring followed by a doctor, but after a few minutes returned, and amidst great hooting the contest was resumed. The remaining rounds saw the boxers going at it hammer arid trfngs, with Trowern striving for a knockout. "However, Purdy was too clever, and. received the only possible verdict.
