Wrestling

NEWS AND NOTES.

The Wrestling Association are making arrangements to have the Robin — Sunni match re-started on Tuesday, the 30th inst., at the Town Hall, Auckland. The match will continue if necessary till Saturday night at twelve or until two falls be gained by one of the competitors. It will be hard to conjecture' what will 1 - be the result of this contest. Robin's manager was at the Demsky —Baxter contest m Wellington and gave the information that Robin would not be able to wrestle seriously until tne end of January and that the confidence m Robin was unabated, so much so that his party may endeavor to increase the already big stake. Great interest was taken m the wrestling tournament at the Napier Jubilee celebrations on the Ist inst. Between five and six thousand spectators assembled on McLean Park to witness a fine programme.. 1 Th'e popular Bob Ranga won the Napier Jubilee all weights -championship, Arnold Davidson the middleweight, Fed Annan the lightweight, and Boy Mace cleverly won the juvenile competition. Ted Thye, the American, is causing a tremendous, amount of interest, during his training stunts in ' Sydney. Jt i.s now mooted that Meeske will be his first opponent m Sydney. The Napier Mardi Gras are advertising for competitors for both wrestling and boxing (see our advertising column) for their Christmas and New Year carnival. The competitions will, bo under the auspices and conducted by the two Hawkes Bay associations. Peter Limutkin, the giant Vinn,, has written the N.Z. Association asking for a series of matches and specially challenging Ike Robin, the champion It vculd be good to have some of these champions visiting the Dominion. . ' Yet^ another American wrestler 'for Australia. Ted Burmjster, a heavyweight, left Manila for Sydney on November 28. ' '-.<•'•» ■ t i • Through my Dunedin confrere, Jack Anderson, of Palmerston South, . sends along the following: "Regarding a challenge by Tommy Walker on behalf of R Tucker to wrestle C. Hewett, a pupil of mine, I wish to state that he is ready to wrestle him at any/time for a suitable purse or even a Small. side stake In fact it would make a good preliminary to a bigger jnatfch. I also take this opportunity of challenging B. Alexander, of Dunedin, on behalf of C. Hewett to wrestle' him at catch weights for a decent side stake. Hewett's : weight -is, lOst and Alexander's list, so it will give the latter a chance to make- good the statements recently published by him. Wrestling is going ahead m the north, but not so down hero. Little wonder when competitors have to compete under such rules as were m vogue on the Caledonian ground on Labor Day. I am still open to wrestle any lightweight, preferably T. Walker, as he lays claim to the lightweight title." v Jack Devine writes: "My attention has been drawn to a piece by 'Professional Wrestler' m last week's 'Truth.' I would like to state that when I met and was defeated by Jack Anderson at the Caledonian sports at Dunedin I had a broken rib. When I. was right again I challenged Anderson for £25 aside, but he did not come to light. Had it not been for that I would have wrestled m the heavyweight class which Davy Dixon won as I had met and defeated him at Balclutha, a week •before and he beat me at Kaitangata. When I wrestled Walker for the .lightweight championship, there was no such thing as a 10 stone limit."

Jowala's manager writes: "I want to say a few words through your papsi' on behalf of jowala as to his middleweight championship of New Zealand to clear the wrestling atmosphere.

jowala sought to fight for the middleweight championship' of N.Z. last year He was advised by the New Zealand Wrestling Association that Nugget Thompson was the holder of the middleweight championship then. So a challenge for the middleweight championship of N.Z. was issued and served tn Nugget Thompson on behalf of towala by the wrestling association. The match 'was arranged and witness«<l by those who were present m Auckland on January 30, 1924. Jowala beat Nugget Thompson and so won the middleweight championship of N.Z, which Jowala is holding up till now. This news appeared m all the papers of New Zealand, so.it does not require any more explanation. Now Jowala notes with great pleasure that the holder of the Australian middleweight championship will be coming to New Zealand to meet the N.Z. middleweight champion. So Jowala is quite prepared to meet him for the Australasian title. But what surprised' Jowala is to know through your paper that' there are men other thaii Jowala who dare to claim the middleweight championship of New Zealand. To those who claim it, I want to let them know on behalf of Jowala that he is the holder of the N.Z. middleweight championship- He .-will keep it unless he gets beaten. So I want. to let the New Zealand public know m general and the wrestlers m; particular that Jowala is always and every time prepared to meet anyone who claims the championship. Like every other championship, the middleweight championship is always open to the best man. Whoever thinks himself capable of wrestling with Jowala for the championship, won't meet .with a refusal."
