The Failings Of Fanning
LAND AGENT'S LAPSE. Frederick Joseph Fanning, a wellkno'wn Wellington land agent, was brought before Magistrate Page at tho Wellington Court on Tuesday last and charged with failing to .comply with the terms of his probation. The unfortunate Fanning, described as an excellent salesman by Lawyer O'Leary, wds stated to have lost good positions through his weakness for drink and to have ignored repeated warnings to keep off.it. / Probation Officer Mills could see nothing for it but to send Fanning to. the inebriates' island for a period. Lawyer O'Leary blamed the Supreme Court for not including a clause m Farming's probation, that he must abstain from liquor and make himself scarce as far as hotels were concerned. His client was not really before the Court for committing a breach of a> particular condition of his probation-, but he had failed to behave himself. It was the practice of land agents to clinch deals by a "spot," and Fanning had not come Uncler the optics of the police as a drunkard. If Fanning were given a chance he would leave Wellington. Magistrate Page thought that accused had had. his chance. Two months' imprisonment would meet the case.
