(By "Demosthenes.") Trainer W. J. Donovan left Hastings last Monday for Trentham with Runnymede, Teiga, Crishna and the Catmint — Fair Rosamond two-year-old. The latter for educational purposes only makes the trip. The early departure of Donovan is so as to allow his youngsters a . chance to get over "homesickness." - Kick Off, who has been off the scene for some time now, is back at Donovan's stable, but will not be placed into work until early next month. Duo has been given a nomination m the Auckland Cup, having made a Quick recovery from his mishap since going back to the station, where he is doing pace work. - Mr. C. F. Vallance' has sent to Granny Maher the three-year-old filly by Kilbroney from Blue River. When trained last season m the Wairarapa this filly showed little ability. ' . Trainer Joe Lawry, together • with his wife, leaves early next week for a pleasure trip to Australia with the intention of witnessing the Melbourne Cup. During: his ■ absence, Queen's Ferry and the Crown Imperial filly will be turned out. . It's a grand" thing to have a lot of money. Last week' four hundred guineas was offered and refused lor j the Mountain Knight mare Whariti. . A fine big four-year-old gelding by Kilbroney — Amber and White recently joined Miss Maher's stable. Our lady trainer is fast getting a big string together and recently vacated the Douglas establishment to occupy her o,wn, recently completed. ' . Percy Johnston is bringing Te Toa from Taranaki to have another tilt at the chief item over. the country at Te Rapa. He finished third last year with 10.12, and is only up 21b. Paddon is a big two-year-old.« He will not be hurried, , as the Archiestowns do, not come to hand early. The same owner has- also ' a yearling filly by Nassau. , Harry Green has now taken over the Shortland Lodge, stables. Two late additions to his string are Polyastra and Western Boom. Since winning, the Avondale Cup, i Gold Light has more than pleased the veteran Stuart Waddell. Her recent fast gallops at Greenmeadows bring back to mind those of Bobrikoff and Desert Gold. The Champion Plate at Trentham will see her very hard. Misgovern is making a fast recovery from her poisoned leg and will shortly be placed m work again with ' Joe Oldfieldl . Peter Smith recently acquired a neat filly two-year-old by Formative. The same trainer's Wormwood gelding has furnished into a nice horse "and showed galloping ability m his, first gallop the other morning. Wassail is nothing like the horse he was a few months. back. In two half mile gallops recently little Correspondent had it well on the big gelding. Leo Goodwin has taken over the old racing establishment known as "Martindale." Dave Kemp, who recently vacated the above, is back, in his own place Having only one horse — -Kenyon — m work at present. The programme of the Wajpukurau summer meeting is out and will be found to suit all classes of nags. With Bill Nightingale still at the helm there is no chance of it being anything but a success. Arbitration, who went wrong last Christmas when looking like coming good, is back m work. Another broken down racer m Akros has also sufficiently recovered to be placed m work again. The section of the Hastings trackwatchers mentioned m last week's notes have received written instructions from the H.B.J.C. not to attend the tracks m future while work is m progress. Naturally the, matter has been the means of . much controversy amongst the sporting fraternity and already one very heated argument is reported between a well-known trainer and one of those affected.. ■ Tressida has foaled a colt foal to Loud Quex. Mr. J. S. McLeod last season sent seven mares to the aforesaid sire and six have produced colts, while the other, Perplexity, is due shortly, .. . . -
Killock's two defeats at Masterton lost Napier and Hastings punters a motzer. The win of Master Black at Opaki, although beneficial to but a few, was nevertheless most popular. Owner MeCormick, mine host at the Patan-g-ata Hotel, has been some time breaking the ice with the All . Black gelding. Don't take much notice or x the failure of White Ensign to pay a^dividend p.t Masterton. Follow him and you will not have long to await a divvy.
