A Misleading Informant
INJUSTICE TO RECRUITING SYSTEM.
On July 19, under the heading "The Way m the Navy," "Truth" published i a statement by a man who gave dei tails to the general effect that the' Navy's recruiting machinery m New "Zealand h d worked slowly m con-* nection with his son's efforts at recruitment. The facts, if correct, suggested official dilatoriness. The Chief Staff Officer of the Navy Office, Wellington, has now written to ."Truth" enclosing a letter purporting to' come from the father of the recruit. The said father ■ writes that the information on which the article was based "was supplied by me and was wholly incorrect The Defence Office at Napier dealt with my son's case correctly and efficiently." •' The writer of the letter is not satisfied with accusing himself of. having misled us, but requests that "Truth" will publish "an apology for the reflections cast." That apology should come from our informant himself. His case is a fine illustration of how a newspaper publishing m good faith an apparently truthful statement, vouched C^r by one who seems to have suffered a public injustice, maj r be deceived. "Truth," however, gladly publishes this contradiction and withdrawal of the charges.
