Hawkes Bay Happenings

(By "Demosthenes.")

I Mr H. Hassail has put into work a C big, upstanding gelding by Strowan from Princess by Captain Webb On breeding one could not pick a better one for a 'chaser. The Gisborne-owned Carrier is at nresent enjoying a few weeks* spell EeSrf being prepaid for the spring racing. . Miss Granny Maher has claimed the anm-opriate name of Butter Scotch for her Heather Mixture—Barley Sugar fwo-y?ar-old filly, who she has leased to Mr. C. F. Vallance. Maunga, who failed to get into the money at the National, Is to be sent 5 XSf owner's place and will not race again for some time. Good Sport has resumed work looking the picture of health. During his three months' spell ho has matured into a big lump of a horse. Crishna, who was kept going all the winter, is growing into a nico three-year-old. He will not race until the return from England of Mr. J. > McLeod. The All Red gelding. All Marimba, has sufficiently recovered from his lameness to resume training. Nowhere near the best has been seen or the gelding yet. Coot at present is galloping very well on tho Hastings tracks and looks like amending for her disappointments m two-year-old races last season. Jack Maher has a useful looking hunter by nutno Uncle Remus. If for-

ward enough will be^ taken to Pakuranga and Waikato Hunt Club meetings m October. A full brother to that good mare Mahuru, the property of Mr. Berne Vallance, is to join the Maher string immediately. He is a year- younger than the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase winner. Vern. Colello is getting an addition to his team m, the shape of a three-year-old half-brother to Watchman by Elysian. Since returning from Riccarton, Wassail has been on the easy list. It is not likely that Mrs. Lan Simson's gelding Avill race again ' until the Avondale meeting. Razzle Dazzle continues to go on the right way, although that leg of her's which m the past has caused Stuart Waddell no little 'worry demands the greatest of attention. Suspicion of late has improved a great' deal m his jumping. He is now a better horse than ever previously and if he' is going to be worth while to be kept going should show up prominently m the Hack Hurdles at Marton next week, where he has been allotted the minimum. Crown Coin is another Hastings horse engaged m the same race with nine stone, who is going well m his track work. Jack Kaan paid a flying visit through here the other day to school the 'chaser Cambric, who gave a good display of fencing. Mr. Gaisford's Formby gelding is now a different horse than when raced last June. . King's FoJly is coming to hand nicely. Mr. ■„ Ormond's colt will probably make his debut as a three-year-old m the Hawkes Bay Guineas as trainer Waddell is unlikely to do Wanganui this spring. Oak Rose and Gay Bobbie have been sent through to participate at the TaranaJrt Hunt Club to-day. Mr. George Beatson's pair are bound to have a good following, but they are getting up m the weight. Three of Mr. J. S. McLeod's brood mares have foaled colts to Lord Quex. Mr. W. G. Stead's mare Blended is the first to produce to Leighton — a colt. The early foals .m this district show a big percentage' of colts. Duo may be given a race at Wanganui, but m all. probability his 'next outing under silk will be m the Avondale Cup. The Demosthenes gelding is standing up to his preparation well and it. looks 'as if Mr. Whelch got a great bargain at twenty . guineas. Landbird, who is nqw trained by his owner J. H. Jeff erd, will contest the Hack Hurdles at Marton. He has done little or no schooling since he raced last June at Hastings. R. Gooseman takes Suspicion, and Crown, Jem through to Marton. The latter although m on the minimum has little chance of winning just yet. Correspondent never carried more condition than at present. In the Marton Handicap with 7,12 he will take a power of stopping. ' Comical, another .local-owned horse engaged m the Marton Handicap, is very forward not raced for some time. Last season Lady Joyce was a better performer than Tuahine, yet Mr. Williams' filly is set to give the otherHastings filly a stone and nine pounds m the short hack -race at Marton. As it is, neither is very forward at present. On Monday next trainer J.efferd sets out with his team; for the Marton, Wanganui, arid Avondale meetings. An induceme"nt has been made to jockey Reg. Ma'ckie Vto make his headquarters at Hastings. In all probability he will come here seeing that he does, all .the riding, for . Harry Hickey's stable. $
