THE COMPETITIONS: ANOTHER RECORD.
The seventh annual festival of the Wellington Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, commences at the Town Hall to-day (Saturday) and will continue until September 13. The total entries received are 3038 — a record for the Dominion and an increase of 21 over those of last year. The box plan is now open at the "Bristol. Tho Society m its endeavors to eneoui'age the best among the competitors to continue their studies and not to rest satisfied with present successes, offers m all eight, scholarships each tenable for one year with any teacher selected by the winner. Two of these aro presented by private donors; tho other six are paid out of the special fund 'to which tho profits of previous years have been carried. The investment of this money provides interest which makes the scholarships a permanent institution quite apart from the annual festival receipts. Thus the educational side of tho Society's work extends far beyond bringing: out talent at the annual festivals.
