Wellington Notes V.M.C.A. IN THE LEAD. (By "Tottenham.")

A great deal of interest was taken m last , Saturday's games, not only m Wellington, where the championship games were advanced a further stage, but m other parts of New Zealand. Marist, Wellington's representatives m the Chatham Cup competition, proved what a fine combination they are by defeating the Manawatu representatives, Dawbers, by five goals to two: Marist will now try conclusions with Harbor Board; at Auckland, to decide which team is to meet the Southern representatives. The Chinese University team gave an indication that they are on the up grade by defeating -Wanganui by four goals to two. In the local competitions, there were no surprises. Thistle vanquished Institute by three goals to nil, V.M.C.A. defeated Karpri by five goals to one, and Hospital got the verdict over the Diamonds by three goals to one. - V.M.C.A. 5, KARORI 1. V.M.C.A. had a walk-over at Kelburn Park last Saturday against Karori, and, without the services of some of 'their regular players, scored an easy win. Campbell set the ball m motion, and Trott and Ballard took the leather , to the other end, the latter putting over the bar. Karori then got going, and McGirr mis-kicking, McIntyre had the chance of a lifetime to open the scoring for Karori, but the ball was sent over the goal-line for a corner, but it went begging. Playing the short-passing game, Y.M. Svere soon attacking, and shots were sent m from all angles, but Prince and Henderson were very safe. A corner to Y.M. was nicely placed, and from a melee m front of goal, Bing put the leather into/his own net (1—0): Karori set up, a determined attack .after this reverse, but could not get the equaliser. ' In the second spell, Campbell was m great form, and after hitting the crossbar, caught the rebound and netted (2—o). Karpri seeriied done, and Campbell, after excellent play by Ballard, scored two more goals (4 — 0), and soon afterwards Cohen' brought the total to (5 — 0). Karori made a. desperate attempt towards the end, and Eton beat Tarrant (s— l). Ballard and Campbell were m fine form for Y.M., and Phillips was brilliant, j McGirr was very, safe at back, and was too good for the Karori vanguard. Eton and Wilkins were the best of the Karori forwards, but there was no attempt at combined play; ":.,.. THISTLE 3, INSTITUTE 0.

Thistle defeated Institute at Lower Hutt by 3 goals to nil. The game was very interesting from start, to finish, both teams indulging m some neat passing movements. Thistle were superior m every department, and had matters much their own way m both spells, but the Institute forwards, who were very nippy, threatened Thistle's goal time and again, and Ewing was kept busy. Taylor, as usual, put up a great show at back for Thistle, and was ably assisted by his partner. The Thistle attack was the most efficient part of the team, and proved too good for the Institute, defence. Logan was prominent, arid he gave many opportunities to his wings with nice long passes. Crundwell, a fast and nippy left-winger, was always dangerous when he got the ball, and his solo score was fully deserved. Lennox and Pearce were the other scorers for the winners': ' On the Institute side, Dempster played a great game, and the forwards all round worked well together : but the Thistle defence was too good for them. Jeffery was the pick of the half-line, arid is m great form.

HOSPITAL 3, DIAMONDS 1.

'Hospital and Diamonds met. at Porirua, and a keen game resulted, the home team winning m the closing stages. Diamonds kicked off. but were soon on the defensive, Hospital showing to advantage. Hospital set up a strong attack, m which Case, Hughes and Thompson were prominent, but the defence of Guest and Hawkins was sound. Lambert brought Waller to his knees to save, and Hughes sent m a hot shot which Waller got rid of at the expense of a corner. This was well placed by Dick, the ball going to Case, who netted (1—0). Diamonds attacked, and Hearne equalised with a<fast shot (1—1). The play now was very willing. Diamonds showing up well, but half-time arrived with the scores level. After the interval Hospital attacked, Guest conceding a corner. This was well placed by Lambert, and Dick getting possession beat Waller (2—l). The game continued fast and interesting, but there was no further scoring. , •

Lothian was m fine form, and scored the next two, and the fifth came from a penalty kick for "hands" taken by Logan. The Scotties then eased down, and indulged m a little juggling and back-heeling. Seatoun broke away occasionally, but failed m front of goal. Smith played a great game on the left-wing, but got no support. , . Petone got »the verdict against V.M.C.A. B by 1 goalto nil, but the honors of* the game wcr* very evenly divided, and the Young Men should n' least have equalised. Both teams played bright football, but the finishing wns weak. Batchelor scored the only goal of the match. Brooklyn and Welgasco met at Kilbirnie, and the former won by 6 goals to 3. They are still runners-up to the Wanderers, and are leaving nothing to chance.
