SCULLING
. HANNAN DEFEATS McDEVITT. The re-row, resulting from the mistake made m covering the course on the first occasion, took place last week between Pat Hannan (New Zealand) and Billie McDevitt (Australia) on^the Waitemata. The race resulted m Ilannan winning m a hollow fashion, McDevitt not rowing nearly aa well as m the former race. After winning the toss, the Australian started off at a far quicker stroke than his opponent, but his strokes lacked weight. With a third of the distance covered, Hannan pulled to tho front and from then on easily held the lead, eventually winning by 12 lengths. ' ' With the McDevitt match over Paddy now professes to be anxious to row Jim Paddon for the world's championship, but stipulates that the race must bo rowed on Waitemata Harbor. Of course, Hannan has no right to stipulate the course. As a matter of fact, Paddon need not take any notice of any challenge Issued ' by Hannan unless the latter is prepared to go to Australia and row on any of the recognl«ed courses over there which Paddon likes to choose. If Jim agrees to come to New Zealand to row Hannan, then the champion still has the right to select the course. Some months ago Hannan challenged Paddon conditionally on the latter agreeing to come to the Dominion to row. Nothing was said by Hannan at the time ns to tho course. It was only after Paddon had announced that he was prepared to come over and give Hannan a chance to row for the world's championship that Hannan stipulated that he would row on the Waitemata but not on the Wanganul River. This stopped negotiations, as Jim was not going to be dictated to a» to the course.
