JACK THE RIPPER.
Memories of that extraordinary sexual murderer known all over the world v quarter of a century ago as Jaclt the Ripper are revived m Mr. William Le Queux's new book. "Things I Know About Kings. Celebrities, and Crooks." According • to his version, papers were found ln the .effects of the Russian monk Rasputin which explained the crimes. This aflirmed' that they were committed by a> Russian doctor named Vviexander Pendachenko, assisted by a friend named Levlnsky and a young tniloress, Wlnber'g. Eventually this doctor was sipuggled out of London and later was' sent to an asylum for attempting to murder and mutilate a woman. 'He died m 1908. Such is the story, which reads almost as though taken from one of L.c Queux'a admirable novels. Jt is too long ago to ever hope for it to be proved beyond all doubt. Evidence was and is meagre, but It has been stated more than once that the perpetrator of the crimes was known to the police, though there was never sufficient evidence to convict him, but it Is Interesting to note that Sir Robert Anderson, who was the Commissioner, of Police at the time, always maintained that the murderer was a medical jnan. On the other hand, Sir Melville MacNaughton. who was m charge of the Criminal Investigation Department at the time, believed that tho criminal lived with his own peoplo, that he absented himself from home nt certain times, and that he committed suicide on or about November 10, ISBB.
