Thick-Hided Wellington
There are at least two ways of trying to get your money for public purposes—the high-brow way and the low-brow way. The high-brow way' Is affected by war memorial promoters, who scorn "getting; money by any other device than a formal, un -boomed, unpropaganded request. "You ought to be proud to give, sir," is the undertone of their song, and they scorn to use raffles, or street-sales, or dogfights m order to raise cash. At the other end of the scale is the low-brow appeal, which fights "all m," hits below the belt, tempts you to gamble, and ..employs - Delilah-. "' to shear Samson. Auckland and Wellington have recently come through the high-brow test with their respective war memorials, with tho result that Auckland has £160,000 and Wellington will be lucky if it gets £15,000. This is such a smashing defeat that nobodj* except the pachydermouß Capital City would fail to 1 notice it. Just at present, to raise money m Wellington, either highbrow or low-brow. Is like trying tp draw dividends out of collapsed meat works.
