THE SKATING SEASON OPENS.

At Colosseum Rink. In the presence of a large attendance the Colosseum Skating Rink m Vivian Street waa officially opened by Mayor Wright on ."Wednesday evening. Mr. Q. B. Weir, secretary of the Colosseum Amusement Company, introduced the Mayor, who performed the ceremony by declaring the rink open for the season. During the course of his speech Mayor Wright referred to skating as being a healthy sport that should be encouraged m Wellington — it being a sport for young and old alike, and ono that he would not mind having a go at liimself. After the Mayor's address was concluded the National Anthem was played by the orchestra, which is under the conductorshlp of Mr. T. Lawrence. The. skating commenced- at 7.80 p.m. and continued till 10 p.m., that hour being the closing time for the rink. The splendidly decorated hall is a credit to the energies of the management, who have done all possible to cater for the skating public. Mr. Q, Quinn, the floor manager, who is from the famous London Olympla Rink, is assisted by Mr. F. Dowds and an efflolent staff. The management have provided adequate accommodation and comfort for the spectators as well as for the skaters, and Judglrwj by the enthusiasm shown by both skaters and onlookers on Wednesday evening it is very apparent that; thl3 pleasant and healthy sport will be woll patronised during the coming winter evenings by young and old alike. . The Colosseum Rink Is under the personal supervision of Mr. Arthur Power, assisted by Mr. G. R. Weir, and from now on during the .session the doors will be open daily from 10 am. till noon, from 2.30 p.m. till 4.30 p.m., from T..30 p.m. till 1 P*m. (special sessions for learners), and from 7.30 p.m. 'till 10 p.m. The band will be m attendance every evening and on Saturday afternoons.
