HEBE'S RING.
A Levanting Lothario.
Miss j3rytha Dunker, who, m the course, of a long period behind o bar, had had) a wider scope than befalls most women for the. observation and study of mankind, was g-uilty of a serious error of judgment some time ago. To the Carltpn, where Miss Dunker dispensed the flowing bowl and served the wine red m the cups, there came one. Jack McLean, who put himself on such excellent terms with the barmaid that he wes allowed to plsty about with her 120-guinea diamond ring. But, base man, he abused the privilege very seriously. The ring was next seen by Miss Dunker reposing m "Wally" Smart's pawnshop, but of the -whereabouts of he m whom she had reposed the trust 'there was no word. He, mercenary and fickle gal'Ulnt, had betrayed her confidence for a Tiandf ul of filthy lucre— a mere £20. Though the police have searched- high and low there is no woid of McLean's whereabouts, and as Miss bunker .sailed for /Sydney at.tiie end of last she was constrained to obtain Magisterial permission to pay £20 to the pawnbroker m order to, obtain her property. This .she gained, with the aid 'of Lawyer Treadwell and Chief\Detective Kemp,' from Magistrate Page" last "Friday. • ■'.:■-,-■■ : ... . '.'. ;■-..; .
