Canned Heat and Ginger.
One Who Knows, 1 ' a valued subscriber and contributor to "Truth" m Los Angeles (Cal.), writes:— -"What I see of Prohibition here is a farce. I ;see more drunks on tne street here now than I saw m the days o£ the saloon. One night about two weeks ago the police arrested 108 drunks m less than two blocks of this city, it is very expensive to keep up a krge army of officials to run down the .bootleggers. There is not a day but Ithey find out some place that is mak-, ing liquor of some kind or other. Believe me, some of that s»tuff is'a x fright. The drug habit is awfully on the increase amongst all classes. They are drinking all kinds of fcnixtures, such as wood alcohol, canned heat -arc? Jamaica ginger. Probably you do not hear much of Canned Heat. The. right name of it is Sterno and it is used m camp stoves by tourists. It is made m lumps, and you dron one of these lumps into a can and put a match to it. You can cook with it. These lumps are -largely composed of alcohol, and they melt it down, and that is how people can drink it. They take Jamaica ginger and mix it with cider or near beer which is a half of 1 per cent, alcohol. • Large numbers have gone blind and others nave gom- crazy through drinking such .Irinks as these They have got Prohibition here sure; but there are screws loose here and there or one would not see so many drunks. Taxes are away higher since the country went Prohibition, and> more police are needed. You will vote on Prohibition next mo-ith, but L-hope. you do not take your pattern from ■the U.S.A., as it is a mostly affair for the people here. I have taken up enough of your valuable space for the< present. Do not forget to swat the 100 per center."
