TROUBLES AHEAD.
! . For a Rugby Union. There are shoals ahead of the Canterbury Rugby Union, and it will take some very careful navigation to avoid striking a reef before next season comes round. Recently the Primary Schools' Association, which is affiliated to the Rugby Union, and has direct supervision over the competitions m the lower grades amongst school boys, decided that m future only teams selected from boy attending public or State schools could compete. This was a direct hit against "-~ Marist Brothers' boys, who have won the Primary Schools' Competition for seven years, and are the present holders of the shield. If the Rugby Union stand for this 'there is every likelihood of a biff smash up next season, because there is nothing surer if the Marist School boys are to be cut adrift as a result of sectarian cant the Maiist Old Boys' Club— four years winners of the .Rugby Union's ; senior competition — will secede from the Union and most likely join up with the League. The Northern; Union game has been maiang steady. p5 v ogress m thl* pro-' . vince m recent years, and if the whole lof the Marist boys, past and present, ■Join up with the League the "-estige 'of the Rugby Union m Canterbury will- crumple .up.'.v.-cry. . quickly. • It will, be very regrettable' if the pernicious sectarian feeling- is allowed to enter into snort.
