Theo. Gudding, wrestler, • writes: "I have been training for some time and I think it is up to Nugget Thompson to give me a chance for a return match for the middleweight wrestling championship. We have had two matches, the result being a win apiece."
Colin Bell and his trainer, Jim Clarke, returned to Sydney by last week's boat. Bell has a business m Sydney and desires to look after it, but he is always willing to return at short notice m the event of a match here. He would like to fight McCleary, Heeney, or J. Leahy, the Tasmanian heavyweight, who is at present doing the shows here with "Snowy" Flynn.
Pat. Gleeson has put up a deposit of £50 for a match with Syd. Godfrey, but so far the Stadium authorities are" too busy attending to the matching of the Yankees and cannot spare the time to look after the local artist.
When Pat. Gleeson and Bob Williams returned to Sydney they told an interviewer that Les. Murray was improving rapidly, and would be sure to strike championship form In the near future. .
The Taranakl Eoxing Association is considering a heavyweight fight at 'Xmas time, and it is probable that Colin Bell will be one of the principals.
C. Cann would like to meet Lin Robinson, and if the pair are matched the Wanganui boy >wiil agree to a side wager of reasonable dimensions.
Sandy McVea, the aboriginal bantam champion, who is now touring the Dominion with. "Snowy" Flynn'a show, is the only . aboriginal that has ever been granted a permit by the Government to leave Australia. McVea has a great record on the other side, and Flynn would be pleased to have him matched with any feather or lightweight m the Dominion. McVea's record shows that he has the goods, for he has fought Syd. Godfrey, Jerry Sullivan, Billy Tingle, Al. King, and a heap of others. Flynn has also got the two Leahys (Bill and Jack), welter and heavy weights, m his team, and they also can be matched at short notice.
W. Preston's shoulder is now right again, and the Newcastle boy has been engaged to flght S. Smith, at Eltham, at the end of the month.
Dave Meekin is back m this country after a successful financial trip to South Africa. He was m Colin Bell's corner at Gisborne, and is asking for a flght with any middleweight m the country.
Private information received from Auckland states that it is unlikely that J. lOeenan will fight again lor twelve months.
When Mr. Alan Maxwell gave "a draw" m the Colin Bell-Tom Heeney flght at Gisborne it was the first to his credit. Most referees dislike "draws," and the Wellington official must have been furious with himself even though the papers say the decision was received with applause.
Those who were present at the BellHeeney fight at Gisborne state that the local heavy would have done a lot better had he boxed all the time and not gone m for wrestling. Probably the great record of Bell had the wind up Heeney. Both men are very anxious for a return match, so what is wrong with the Wellington Association putting tliem on about 'Xmas or early m the New Year?
During the progress of the Cole-Heeney fight, Referee Maxwell came down like a ton of bricks on the latter for using his elbow. This is a pernicious habit, but unfortunately boxers often get away with it. (Some say Jack Heeney got it onto Cadman at New Plymouth). At Gisborne it looked to be a habit with Tom Heeney, for when a hook missed he automatically pushed his arm up under his opponent's cUJn.
Billy Preston has now thrown m his lot with a well-known trainer-manager, who knows the game m New Zealand backwards. He has been matched to meet S. Smith at Eltham, on November 23. Win or lose, this smart boxer should catch the eye of the association, as he is not the boy to refuse anything. He "Wants fight, and whoever meets him will be kept busy.
