ARNST-HADFIELD SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
HAS HANNAN FOf?fesTALLED PADDON?
(By "THE WIPE.") L»ast Saturday Dick Arnst and D'Arcy Hadfield met at the Wanganui "Herald" Office, and signed articles' for the forthcoming- -world's sculling championship, to be fowed on Janu-ai-y 5, 1022, on the Webbanui River. This done, massive Dick held out his flipper to Hadfield and said, "Shake, D'Arcy! May the best man win." The challenger blushingrly secured a grip, and replied, "I endorse those sentiments, Dick." "Truth" supports the "notion." On Wednesday, the 2nd inst., a telegram was received from 'Hamilton, stating" that Mr. George Seifert, acting on behalf of Jim Paddon, Australia's sculling- crack, had •lodged £100 as a challenge to the winner, but it is stated that a private message ihas been received that "Pat" Hannan had previously put up the needful with the Marlborough "Express" to bind a match with the winner. If this report is true, "Pat" has prior claim to Paddon. The latter is a good and clever waterman, but he seems to procrastinate too much. As pointed out m these columns a few weeks ago, he was "sniped" by Gunman Arnst, when he (Barry) beat Felton m Australia, thus allowing Dick to become "constitutional" champion. "Truth" hopes that the report of Hannan's deposit is groundless, for "Pat" has Buckley's chance of winning 1 , and no interest would be taken m such a match. The articlee governing 1 the world's sculling supremacy should be amended to preclude others than those who have shown champion form from challenging. It is ridiculous that a man who has more bullion than ability should be able to forestall bona fide claimants to a contest. "Truth" hopes "Pat," good sport that he is, will withdraw at this juncture and allow Jim Paddon to tvy and wrest the blue ribbon of pushing an outrigger from the winner of -this contest. Nevertheless, Paddon's dilly dallying is not to be commended. It is the early bird that catches the big- plums of sculling-. Dick Arnst realised this many moons ago.
