A Wasted Effort.

After putting the wind up certain clubs the Hon. Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal .Affairs, has very wisely decided that totalisator permits" are to be issued as : usual- until' Parliament meets and either adopts or throws, overboard the report of the Racing Commission. Hunter's, Bill for increasing the permits, the country would now have had thirty additional permits and .there would have been no talk of shutting down big ' clubs like Avondale and Napier Park. But if the writer is any judge at all there will be no shutting down, and for ; the very good reason that it will no*t pay. Fancy the brainy commissioners asking the Government, which at the present time does not know where to turn next for a shilling, to cut off such a bountiful source of revenue as Avondale and Napier Park' and to substitute losing propositions like Waipapakauri (very few people know where this place is) and Motueka. .Could anything be more absurd?
