Mr. Allan Wilkie:.andlMi,ss Hunter^ Watts and their- company have commenced a season 1 of Shakespeare at the Theatre Royal,, Christchurch. -y The company is a strong one, and the production will be of (high standard. . The repertory for the season will include "Hamlet," 'The Merchant of Venice," "The Merry Wives of Wind-, sor," "Julius Caesar," "Twelfth Night," "Macbeth," ."As You Like;- It ." and '^Othello." .Miss Hunter-Watts is said to give; very impressive reflihed portrayals of Shakespeare's heroines, ■ and her Rosalind, Ophelia,' Vi6la;L.?tdy. Macbeth, Juliet, Desdemona and;:Porr tia are all .depicted wit 1 !! a' sureri&ss'cff touch and faithful character portrayal. The contrast between Desdemona and Lady Macbeth, and between Portia and Ophelia are very fine thistrlbiiio studies by Miss Hunter-Watts. The terrible Lady Macbeth lives just aa surely as the ipalpitating and romantic Juliet, and intellectual Portia ia just as convincing as shrinking Ophelia. By the visit of the Allan Wilkie Company, * playgoers' will witness versions of these characters by an actress whose natural- and brilliant histrionio gifts are supplemented by careful study of the great dramatist.
