"BUSINESS OF A BOOKMAKER."
On a charge of -having carried on the business of a bookmaker, William Whelan appeared before Magistrate McCarthy. Mr. A. J. Donnelly prosecuted, and Mr. C. S. Thomas defended accused, who elected to be tried by a jury. A bushfeller, of ICaitieke, Charles Carlson, deposed that m December last he made a bet on the Auckland Cup. He sent a letter to Whelan enclosing £1 to pay for a double bet on First Salute. in the Auckland Cup and Rossini m the Railway Handicap. He got the receipt produced, dated December 16. He had made ! previous bets, and had received race-cards from Whelan. He had no luck with the bets but had been pretty close.
Mr. Donnelly said he had a number of other witnesses to call and probably the same position would arise as m the Whitta case, m regard to the admissibility of certain evidence. The Whitta case would be decided m about ten days. The Bench said it was no use going on with the charge 'until the Whitta case was decided, and adjourned the case till April 27. • Bail was allowed on the accused's own recognisance of\£soo.
