HOW COLWILL WAS CAUGHT.
Amongst the undefended divorce petitions to come before Mr. Justice Hosking at Auckland was one m which Harriett Colwill sought a severance of her (marriage with John Henry Colwill, importer, of Auckland, on the grounds of his misconduct with a woman named Doreen Baker. Mr. Patterson appeared for petitioner, the case being undefended.
Haxriett gave evidence that she was married to Colwill m Auckland, m 1900 and they lived together for thirteen years, when things became such that they separated.
James Potter, private inquiry agent, said that he had been engaged to keep an ej r e on Colwill to learn what tricks he was up to. On two occasions Colwill had left the city on a weekend trip to Henderson with a young woman, and on arriving at the country station' they had secured a' couple of hacks and ridden to an. empty house a mile or two m the country. On the first occasion witness and another sleuth followed, and saw the light put out m tho house at bedtime, and the following morning the sleuths knocked at the door, and saw both Colwill and Doreen. They showed the sleuths through the house, m which there were two bedrooms; but on one of the beds the bed .linen was nicely folded up showing that it had not been used the previous night. On the second occasion when Colwill and his lady love were found m the house Colwill admitted that he and his lady had fractured the Seventh Commandment. This was m July. His Honor granted a decree, trimmed with costs.
