Mat. Dawson, mine host of the Parkside, hung his six quid coat m the hall of the hotel, on August 2. A football match was on m the Carisbrook ground nearby. Mat. missed his coat m the evening, and some weeks later he saw accused, Alexander Wallace Copley, wearing it m Rattraystreet. Detective Kelly accosted Communist Copley, who informed him that he purchased the coat from a cove at the Carisbrook for £1. Ajfter ihearinff accused's lame story, Magistrate Bartholomew, at Dunedin S.M.s Court, found he was not gullible enough to swallow it. Copley was further charged .that on July 16, at Taumarunui he stole a cheque valuer! n+ £11 12s 4d, the property of Roscoe Smith. He pleaded guilty. „ The Magistrate: It is evident you' are drifting into a life of dishonesty and loafing. , Copley was accordingly put away for reformative treatment for a period of twelve months on the first charge; on the second he was convicted and directed to reappear for sentence when called upon.
