CANTERBURY CHAT
(By ' "Silenus.")
Mr. W. A. Saunders, the efficient and popular secretary to the Southland Racing Club, is resigning from that position. W.A.S. knew his busii^ess, and he was always genial and courteous with those whose business brought them into contact with him on horsey matters. He will be hard to replace, and if rumor is true that the resignation was precipitated by a difference of opinion with the president of the club, the committee should be able to " straighten things out. It is much easier to appoint a new president than to get a secretary of W.A.S.'s stamp. Sir Geo. Clifford, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, has appointed Sir Win. Herries to act In his stead m the' hearing of H. and G. Young's appeals against the Canterbury District Committee. Gloaming 1 Is not likely to show up again till the Grand National. One or two prads looming- up on the horizon will extend the. champion if they meet him at the Grand National. Mr. R. J. Mason has a green lot In hand, but Kolyma and Adopted are being kept at hard work, and the cost of their tucker is well m sight at the Autumn meeting. Bore is getting ready for the big fences down south (Southland and Rlverton). He jumps well, but he will find a lot of good jumpers down there. His pace may help him some, but that is a declining factor with the old horse. W. McDonald has something good for the Autumn meeting. Look at this bunch — Some Kid, Listening Post, Brackenfield, Sans Soucl, and all m rare condition. A punter would not need the proverbial Chow's luck to land a winner or two m that lot. Bombproof likes jumping, and when he takes to the game properly he should become a top-notcher, because he is speedy and can carry weight. Southland Racing Club is giving £3825 m stakes next month. . Harold and George Young, although the Canterbury District Committee cancelled their licenses, are m regular attendance at the training track riding members of the Chokebore Lodge team m their work. Comedy Girl is being schooled over the logs. She is taking kindly to the game, and jumping m very fair style. Silver Peak, who was badly kicked during the D..T.C. Autumn meeting, is getting over • the effects of it, and backers may enter him m their books for an early appearance. Gamecock is nominated for Napier Park and Dannevirke meetings, but he will not go north. P. McGrath is going to keep him at it over pony hurdles at Riccarton. He wants him to jump fast, as he will hold his own on the flat. Keep tally of him for the Winter Hurdles. Amythas is likely to race at Auckland on the second day of the Great Northern St. Legei\ He also might likely win it.
