P.P.A. Poison
The Lie Direct to "Coward Yell-a-Lot."
(From "Truth's" Dunedin Rep.)
Recently at His Majesty's Theatre, Dunedin, Howard Elliott endeavored to show how Rome owned and ran this country, especially the Public Service and Parliament. The reason why the protest of 200 meetings was ignored protesting against favoritism for the Aiarist Brothers m the matter of Conscription, was, according to "Coward" Elliott, that Archbishop O'Shea threatened Sir James Allen that if this legislation was not passed there would be trouble. There was a threat to call out on strike all the Roman Catholics m the Public Service, and if they had gone out yraO WOULD BE LEFT? On Friday evening of last week Sif; James Allen was speaking at Middlemarch, when he was put the following question: "Is it true that Archbishop O'Shea threatened you that, if legislation was passed including Roman Catholic Priests and Brothers m the Military "Service Act, all Roman Catholic civil servants would be called out on strike?" The question was a tickler for Sir James, and he became strangely perturbed. In solemn tones he replied that he had ; wished during the present election campaign and at all times to avoid reference to any sectarian questions or sectarian strife. The statement referred to, however, was so grossly wrong that lie had deemed it his duty, knowing how untrue it was, to telegraph to Archbishop O'Shea, informing him of what had been said, and asking him for his comment. He had received the following reply: "Howard Elliott's reported statement at Piinedin last night absolutely without foundation: T never made any such threat or suggestion. — (Signed) Archbishop O'Shea." Sir .Tamos Allen also denied that any such thre.-it was brought to bear upon him, neither m the 'mrMation nor m the administration of the Act wag any person or sect GIVEN PREFERENTIAL, TFIPTATMEMT.
