THE DEADHEAD'S DIARY
The Universal Company has offered one hundred thousand dollars for four stories to suit their star, Dorothy .Phillips. Now, then, all you scenario writers and budding- journalists, here's the chance of a lifetime. After a long- absence from the sil-ver-sheet, Owen Moore has returned, and his first picture is "The Crimson Gardenia," released by Goldwyn. Mr. Moore is scheduled for many releases this year under the Goldwyn banner. Margarita Fisher, with Jack Mower, make a welter of the Mutual feature, "A Square Deal," m which the fair Margarita is a convert to the "individualism" theory, and joins the "Culture Club" to the extreme annoyance of her family and her young: man. The vicissitudes through which she passes owing to her advanced notions, make a rattling- story, m which she loses no opportunity of making the most of her role. Norma Talmadge's latest Select picture, "De Luxe Annie," is still registering a distinct success as a stage play m many of .the largest cities. The picture was adapted for the screen by Paul West from the play by Edward Clark. Surpassing even her supreme characterisation m "Ghosts of Yesterday" and "By Right of Purchase," this charming Select star has inspired her countless admirers to new enthusiasm with her portrayal of the heroine m "De Luxe Annie." Another dramatic hit for Constance Talmadge — that Is the secret of "The Shuttle's" success; for this brilliant actress possesses not only a rare charm, a winsome beauty and a winning- personality, but she has been blessed with the greatest gift of the gods, talent— and the fullness and depth of her powers are revealed m her comedy portrayals, but perhaps even more adequately m a role such as Bettina Vanderpoel's m "The Shuttle," m which her characterisation runs the entire gamut of human emotions. "The Shuttle" will win you complete^'. Sparkling, womanly, refined, appealing, and more than all these is Alice Joyce m "That Winchester Woman," her latest Vitagraph release. The production contains romance, intrigue, the unusual and the unexpected. It is the story of how a strong, honorable woman cleared the clouds from her own name and stood ready to sacrifice everything to save a young girl from the threatening blight of dishonor. The Vitagraph Company is to be congratulated m having selected such an ideal story for the lovely young star, and one which gives her such splendid opportunities of displaying her exceptional ability and beauty. s: •: i: There is no novelist who knows South Africa as Cynthia Stockley does, and in -no book is this so notable as m "The Claw," which has been scenario^ed for the screen, and is Clara Kimball Young's next ■feature for Select. It is a thrilling story of life on the veldt; Clara shows her versatility m the great out-of-doors story — riding horseback, fighting lions singlehanded, and crossing alone by night the lonely, mysterious African veldt, after being deserted by the drunken mule driver. The story makes a rattling fine vehicle for Clara the beautiful, the picturlsation supplying: all the blanks of the imagination that the story lacks.
