NEWS AND NOTES
Austin, is now trained by J. Fryer at Hawera. ' Cello is no good m soft going, so lie was not started at Marton. t Black Mar-k has gone lame and he could not race at Marton. Sweet Corn seems to be one of those that can act m any going. J. Deerey has gone to Sydney to ride Rewi Poto m his engagements there. H. Lorigun got a broken collar bone when Want fell with him at Marton. Vacuum was offered for sale at Marton but no one wanted the black gelding. There was none of the apprentice business about Egmont Park at Marton so the price suffered accordingly. Rio was nodding to his friends after the Hack Hurdles at Marton and his trainer will have difficulty m keeping him on his feet. S. J. Reid left for Auckland this j week and took with him some of J. H. J Jefferd's team, who are to race at the Avondate meeting at the end of the month. Old Combustion, who is now trained by his owner at Marton, seems to have taken a new lease of life and he ran quite a good race behind Yankee Jack at Marton. Faulty jumping spoilt an excellent chance for Master Boris m the Hack Hurdles at Marton. The chestnut gelding went up to the last couple of fences as if he had never seen a jump before. Nursing Sister, who was racing m the interests of a raffle at Marton, just failed to defeat a hot favorite m Egmont Park m the short hack race. The lucky one that draws the Solferino filly will get plenty of offers for her. Yankee Jack saddled up fresh and well at Marton, where he beat a fair field. Though not a top-notch performer, the Frisco gelding would be a very good proposition for South Island meetings. His jumping at Marton was perfect. The Marton club has not been fortunate enough with its cross-country events. The trouble is the flags marking the course. This is an out-of-date system, and is not found anywhere else. Horses should be allowed to take the shortest possible course between the fences. There was an idea that A. Oliver would set up m Hastings as a private trainer to a well-known owner m the Hawke's Bay, but the project fell through. Oliver is now thinking of taking up farming. To look at him, one would not think he will be able to get down to a suitable riding weight again.
Otaki next Saturday and the following Monday. Walmatao has again joined the active brigade at Otaki. Kipling has been placed second m his last three starts. Dribble has been tried over fences at Hastings and jumps well. Birkenvale is due at any time. He only wants a track that suits him. If Motuihi starts m the Maiden at Otaki he will have it on .his own. The failures of Oratress at Otaki were very costly to her connections. The useful Olynthus is again m work at Awapuni and will be seen out at the Otaki meeting. Metallum has again changed hands, and at Marton she ran m the colors of Mr. A. D. Scott. Although they carry tails, it is a thundering good job for saddle-sitters that horses cannot speak. Zola ran two fair races at Marton, ' and W. Rayner should shortly pick uj. ( a stake with the son of Zaida. The New Zealand Cup candidate, • Mascot, m to make her first appearance this season m the big handicap at Otaki. Thirty-seven horses remain m the New Zealand Cup, but there will be a big weeding out at the next payment which is a £6 one. For the second day open sprint at Marton backers rushed Volo like two hungry hounds after one bone. Yclo won, so no one was hungry. H. Telford has nominated «his team freely at the Otaki meeting. He will probably race the English-bred Fulica, 80-Peep, Philomela and Active. A three-year-old filly by Demosthenes, from Ikon, is at present being hacked about at Te Mahanga, but she will shortly join L. Wilson's stables at Hastings. Sir Fanciful filled second place m each of his races at Marton. Out of four starts for his nerw owner the Rokeby gelding has been placed first twice and second twice. The fact of there being no train service prevented a Jot of horses from racing at Dannevirke. Owners will not put valuable three-year-olds on the roads where the traffic is thick. Sail Home had every chance m the Bracelet at Marton, but he could only fill second place behind Khartoum. He was m a similar position behind Pawerewere m the Hunters' Hurdles on the second day. Want and First Line represent the best form" m the Hack Steeples at Otaki. The former should do better than he did at Marton, as the jumps ai-e not so formidable and he is regularly schooled over them. On Monday last A. Attwood shifted his team from Feilding to Woodville where they are to be trained m future. The Woodville course is certainly becoming very popular as a preparing ground for thoroughbreds. With a pull of 361bs m the weights the Wanganui-trained Farce easily accounted for a useful field m the Electric Hack Handicap at Marton. The minor places were filled by Sir Fanciful and Egmont Park, neither of whom at any time looked like defeating the winner. The well-known jockey, Sid Reid, has purchased the stables and homestead known as Martindale, at Hastings, and lie will shortly set up there as a public trainer. Reid has a creditable career as a horseman behind him, and he should not lack patrons m his new venture. A change of horsemen for Volo on the second day at Marton gave backers a lead, and the bay gelding who moved with a lot of dash m his preliminary, was sent out a short-priced favorite m the open sprint event. H. Young always had him m a handy position and he won easily at the finish. At his first attempt m a steeplechase Silenus won the Rangitikei Hunt Cup. The short-owned geiding was beautifully handled by R. Hunt while Stetson, Patariki and Mac were cutting at each other all the way Silenus was m behind watching their capers. Once over the last fence to took charge and won comfortably. . Mi-. C. Diamond, of Hastings, entered Woolahra (Woolloomoolloo — Mother Goose) for the New Zealand Cup, and by an error the horses named appeared as Wolaroa (Wolawa — Mangaroa). The mistake was rectified when Mr. G. F. Hardy, owner of the latter, asked for an explanation. Wolaroa is a three-year-old filly and will not be ready to race for some time.
Argo is a good jumper but his racing qualities end there, Mr. Angus Keith has been appointed starter for the Manawatu Racing Club. Deeside does not like the jumping business and regularly he fails to complete the course. Omahu likes the mud and this and his condition materially assisted him to win at Marton. Unlike the majority of his sire's stock, Mannish is a very quiet horse and if not unduly hustled he should turn out useful. • Stetson was unlucky enough to get blinded at the double m the View Halloa Steeples at Marton and the grey gelding came down. Want was given a great chance by his connections m the big jumping event at Marton, but he came down early m the race. >•"' Friends of Mr. W. .1. Phillips, owner of Nobleman, wore pleased to see him at the Marton meeting, and he is quite recovered from his recent illness. The well-known jockey, R. Young, . was recently married. His bride is the laughter of Billy Homes of Bulls, for many years a prominent trainer. Owners and trainers are getting very sick of the walking business, and unless matters improve greatly, the coming meetings will experience a bad time. When holding a long lead and looking a sure winner, Onipoto ran inside a flag m the Hack Steeples on the first day at Marton and his rider had to pull him up. • • Empyrean has developed kidney trouble, and could not make the journey to Marton. Bad luck, as the son of The Welkin was beginning to show a bit of form. The Palmerston North sportsman, Mr. Albert Wilson, recently joined the ranks of the benedicts. "Cookey" has been busy answering congratulatory telegrams all last week. At Marton last week, Mr. J. McDonnell, who is a prominent steward and a good worker, was compelled to miss the races on account of an injury received m the hunting field. It is an open secret that those clubs that rushed to put money into a new totalisator syndicate, are not at all pleased with the idea now, and many of them would like to back out of the contract. The Speaker was a good favorite for the Marton Handicap, but he failed badly. The Demosthenes gelding is only a little fellow and the going prob^ably did not suit him. He did much better on the second day. At Woodville recently F. Davis was compelled to put Red Pepper out of trouble. The colt was found to be m a very bad way and as there seemed to be no chance of saving him, a ball was given the son of Demosthenes and Gipsy Belle. An advertisement m this issue notifies that the services of the thoroughbred horse, Mountain Knight, will be at the services of breeders this season. The son of Mountain King has already proved a stud success and his two-year-olds show plenty of pace. . Mr. A. J. Toxward, of Palmerston North, is having a motor-lorfy built to convey his horses to meetings during the railway "cut." Several other owners are also using it and last week the guineas candidate Warplane was sent through to Wanganui. It is expected that Lucid and the other members of Mr. T. H. Lowry's team will also make the Wanganui trip by. the same means. It is becoming a common practice now to school horses m hurdle races. This is not fair to the riders engaged m the race and if it is persisted m, the riders will band together and boycott these owners. There are not enough jumping races m the country that riders can afford to take the risks of riding unschooled horses and when hurt having to stand down often for weeks and months. In well-informed circles, it is thought certain that the Government will shortly reach out and take the broken money or what is known as the "fractions" from the totalisator. It is certain that this amounts to a considerable sum m the course of twelve months, and as it cannot be said to belong to the racing clubs they should not be allowed to purloin it. Nothing is ever allowed to get out as to how much the clubs get m "fractions," but now that there is Government inspection of the totalisator the amount could easily be ascertained. It is not likely to be much short of £3D,000 on an annual turnover of over £4.000,000.
Vermillion looks very well now and should not be long: m: winning .a race. Hindi is working , well at Hastings, but he was not sent by road to Dannevirke. Early Dawn (Demosthenes — Marty) is m work again at Hastings and is shaping well. The Pakuranga Hunt Club's meeting takes place on the Bllerslie racecourse to-day. The Railway Department is now carrying brooa mares who are consigned to studs. Master Webster seems to 'have trained off and his showing at Marton was not his best. Onipoto went all to pieces after his first race at Marton and on the second day he could not raise a canter. Te Mahanga yearlings by Mountain Knight from Mangaroa, Hopeiti, Fairy Gold all show great promise. The Douglas Estate horses, Kohu, Harangue, Sunny Smile and Tropical, are all doing good work at Hastings. Maioha is m good condition at Hastings and if he keeps on the way he is doing, he is sure to win races this season. Penury Rose ran a good race m the Marton Handicap, but want of a race told over the last bit. He scored handily m his next attempt. Four members of Mr. W. R. Kemball's team m Miss Gold, Vasilkov, Rebuff and Raoeful, were shipped to Melbourne via Sydney last Saturday. Mattock is a great" jumper, and when he does a bit more racing over the big fences he will be seen to advantage m better company than he met last week. First Line is a fine jumper and he should be a useful horse m hack steeplechases next season. There is a race at Wanganui this month that should suit the black gelding. , Anyone who expects to get anything more than pointers, at small race meetings that precede the Dig ones, has not got as much brains as Providence has endowed a billy goat with. Arrowfield looked a picture at Marton, and his turn will shortly arrive. The youngster who rode him last week was not seen to the best advantage on the first day, but he did better when m front on the second day. Sincere sympathy will be felt for the well-known peneiller, Bill Scott, who recently lost one of his twin sons. The J little chap suffered from, an internal complaint and the parents took him to a New York specialist, but the child died., after an operation. Mr. E, W. Alison's recent Australian purchases, Some Boy and Khuhlai Khan, arrived at Wellington this week on their way to Auckland. Some Boy is a decent handicap horse, and goes a middle distance well. He had 9.7 m the Moorfield Handicap and was within 51bs of Estland. Paddington Green has been working very well on the tracks, and Ei George expects him to win a race on the northern trip. The chestnut is nicely weighted m the Jellicoe Handicap today and those who remember his bulldog finish at the Winter meeting will doubtless risk a sovereign on him.
