PASSED ON TO PUBLIC TO PAY
City Schools Committee's Condemnation.
At a meeting of householders called on Monday last by the Auckland City Schools Committee, the secretary and treasurer Oscar Mcßrine — a wellknown Labor man-— let some daylight shine on some of the methods of Rev. Howard Elliott's protege — the P.P.A. He said this body wanted the committee to pay its electioneering bills. He dceiared that for some time the COMMITTEE HAD BEEN DUNNED with an account from Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., for 3000 ballot papers and 10,000 election notices m April, 1918, the amount being £8 12s Gd. In his official capacity he wrote to tho firm, and he got the following answer: Auckland, New Zealand, 3rd July, 1919. Mi-. O. Mcßrine, 5 Hardinge-street, Auckland. Dear Sir, We are m receipt of yours of the Ist inst. The goods m question were ballot papers and election notices, value £ 8 12s 6d, ordered by and charged to Dr. Reekie. In May, 1918, he called and asked us to transfer to Protestant Political Association. This was done, but iii September last the EP.P.A. advised that this should be charged to the City Schools Committee, to whom an account was immediately posted. We enclose a copy of printing, both jobs being the same. Yours faithfully, Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. And the following is the "ticket" on the "dodger" that the firm is asking a settlement' of: CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE ELECTION ON MONDAY. APRIL 22 at 8 pjn. (come a little before time) at THE ARTILLERY GUN-ROOM, RUTLAND STREET (don't make a mistake about the place). VOTE FOR THE PROTESTANT TICKET. JOSEPH HENRY DETGHTON JOHN JAMES EDGAR JAMES JOINER HENRY ROBERT JUDGE ERNEST LILEY JETHRO LOCK JOSEPH SAMPSON P.ALMER HERBERT SCOTT ROBERT LANGIiANDS WALKER. After some discussion the following resolution was unanimously .carried: "This meeting of householders CONDEMNS THE ACTION of the Protestant Political Association m endeavoring to get its election expenses m connection with the annual meeting of householders, held m April, 1918, paid out of the public funds, and supports *the City Schools' Committee m resisting the attempt."
