NORTHERN NOTES.
(By "Woolstone.") : Spalperion is a fine jumper, but the Eden Steeplechase was a one-horse display. . ' ; Empire carried his crankiness to Avondale. He did not leave the barrier m the Welter Handicap till the very last. North Loburn, who ran a great race m the Juvenile, displayed poor form m the Nursery at Avondale. Out of eight starters m the WaiKu- , mete Hurdles only,, three finished. The rest bit the 'dust. •: - . . - • . . In the Autumn Handicap, Ryan, on Bedford, lost a stirrup. Bad for Bedford, who was full of finish. Periona *has some speed and should have finished better than second place m the Mount Roskill Hack Handicap. Stammer was made a warm favorite In the Nursery at Avondale, but was among the "alsos," being beaten out of a place by Rose Queen, Pentagram, and the unlucky Canowindra. Pentagram is a bay gelding that is likely to grow into a useful three-year-old performer. Corregldor had a successful turn at Avondale — two firsts and a second, giving R. J. Graham £310 m stake money. Taimai's owner was the only one to top Corregldor's coin, he receiving £450 for his trip to the dry centre.. Taiami was a disappointment m the big event on the second day at Avondale; but the flying filly met with some interference. All Talk showed some pace In the early stages of the Autumn Handicap, but failed to see it out. All over the I sticks is the gelding's next job. A good jumper, so he Is sure to pay his i way m the winter. Bridgie carried some money both days when she stripped m minor l events at Avondale. The mare is evidently not as speedy as she looks. Two of the principal failures at Avondale were Fabriquette and Bella- '■ city, though the latter did manage to get into a third place on the second day. The future for Fabriquette, apparently. Slowcoach lived lip to his name at Harry Hayr's racing ground. Looked well, but not speedy enough. Gazlque's party after many setbacks got some of their own returned m the Autumn Handicap. The stake they lifted was £ 300,; what came from the tote is still unmentioned. The handsome Prince Charleroi though accepting both days for Avondale, started on neither day. Said to be something wrong 1 with the once promising Prince. . Perhaps better luck as a three-year-old. Some horse Is Hyllus, for the chestnut made a ding-dong finish of the Welter, getting his neck m front of Crowhurst, but was astern of Corregi,/dor, to whom he was giving 221bs. Rockfield, who was said to be one of Alison's good things, finished last m the last race of the Avondale meeting.
