THE STRENGTH OF STRONG.
Archibald T. Strong, the pet patriot of. the. Melbourne "Herald," is a strong;; man m several respects. The s,trengtl&v of his patriotism is equalled, by the^ strength of his language; . but both... are surpassed by the strength he di^n: plays'in supporting- a great variety ro^ jobs. : As a pillar of patriotism andC^j prop of posts, Samson has nothing on Bauldie. To begin with, he holds dowrr;some job at the University. We b.e-:^ Uove that it has something to do with? the teaching of English; but after: reading Erchie's verse—and worse-^---we find that hard to believe. Erchfe's^ Strong work as the paid patriot of ttjev "Herald" is as well-known as tKe" limited circulation of that meat-wrap" permits. But this by no .means exhausts the list of Bauldie's well-paid exertions for his bleeding country. Among- other things he is a Commonwealth film censor, for which he receives an "honorarium" of £100:a^ year. In his spare time, Strong pro-;' duces "literature," and we venture-;tb3 say that his patriotic effusions :(to! order) pay him far better than ■his^ poems. Thus a recent Commonwealth 1 Government Gazette announced "the' payment of £110 5s to Mr. AY- T-:' Strong for literature of approximately* 42,000 words supplied to the Director-'-General of Recruiting-." That = works; out at a shade over, five-eighths of a penny per word, which is considerably more than the union rate. Who sajjs patriotism doesn't pay? ■ ""
