NORTHERN NOTES.
(By "Woolstone.")
Quite a number of horses out before breakfast at Ellerslie. One of the best is Windorah, who is going very well. Arch Lassie, who is usually accompanied by Mullingar, is another showing to advantage. $ Spanner and Hineamaru are being hurried along, and both are doing very well. Totara Jack, who had . a race at Egmont, bears a bright appearance. Ring Lupin is doing slow work. He is on the big side. When the tracks get firm be with him. < Ma Copper is improving under his owner's guidance and should turn out useful. Comment was made about Reparation last week. He is without doubt a likely looking sort. . . . . Gluterino, who has been well cared for by P. Conway during his owner's absence m Australia, is jumping the fences well. Colonel Soult is still showing fine track form. The pity is he does not repeat it m public. General Stephen and Escape are being sent along, and will be ready for early engagements. Notability is an aspirant for jumping honors. A maiden hurdle race just now should attract a big field. Julian is giving a good deal of attention to All Talk the All Black gelding. This horse had 21 starts last season and got two seconds and three thirds. A win would now be profitable. Tenacious on the track is showing the form that suggests fitness. He should be kept m view for a hurdle event when the company is not over strong. The consistent Lightning has been again taken m hand by Lambess. Her win m the Eden. Handicap of Auckland's last Autumn meeting is fresh m her admirer's minds. Carmen Sylva, .who was very unlucky last year, has been taken up again by P. Jones. Twice placed m nine starts was her la^t year's record. Auldana, the Multifid gelding, is another Ellerslie track worker. He is showing a good deal of pace. Commenting on our remarks on Princess Charming In our last issue, a sport visiting the Auckland office of this paper said the best two two-year-olds up north, m his opinion, were No Mistake and Prince Charleroi. Apart from Mangainahoe, whom last week this column mentioned as being well treated, there is little Auckland talk over the New Zealand Cup. There is no sound from the owner yet as to his intentions, but the horse is certain to go to the post. The annual meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club was held on October 2. Pa Alison warmed the chief seat m his ca•pacity as president, and E. W. had his usual fling at the wowser and his ways. :The report showed that the club over the Auckland water held two meetings — Spring and Summer — : and m the three' days of running paid away £5770. As the club came out with a surplus of £1320 3s 3d the committee, is full of hope of scoring again this year. An Item from the annual: "The committee Is pleased to report that the work
of extension and enlargement of the club's racecourse was finished m time to enable both the Spring 1 and Autumn meetings to be held upon it. The course has proved to be an exceptionally fine one, and although the grass had not grown suffi-' ciently to provide a full covering of turf, the racing proved highly successful. The course will be m perfect order during the forthcoming season." "Woolstone"- hopes so. i .
